What does the term organic mean?
The term organic refers to the method used to produce the food on the farms and how the food is handled after leaving the farm. Organic farming is based on practices that replenish and maintain the soil fertility while assisting nature’s balance through diversity and recycling of energy and nutrients. This method also prohibits the use of most synthetic fertilizers and pest controls. Organic agricultural products are processed, packaged, transported, and stored to retain organic integrity, without the use of artificial preservatives, coloring, or other additives, irradiation or toxic, persistent pesticides.
Organic foods seem to always be more expensive. Why should I buy them?
When you buy certified organic products, you support conscientious farmers and companies creating a healthy agricultural system form the ground up. Organic standards define principles and practices which must be followed from soil preparation right up to the moment you purchase a product.
Why are some products listed as organic but they are not 100% organic?
There are different levels of organic. Products labeled “100% organic” contain only organic ingredients. Products labeled as “organic” contain at least 95% organically produced ingredients. Products with at least 70% organically produced ingredients but less than 95% can be labeled “made with organic…”. For example, a soup label may say “made with organic vegetables” or “made with organic beans, rice and tomatoes”. Products containing less than 70% organic ingredients can only list those ingredients on the ingredient panel.
